In this newsletter I will reflect on the secret awakening that nurtures and guides our desire to live a contemplative way of life. At the end of this reflection I will tell you how you can watch a series of videos that Tami Simon did with me and other spiritual teachers on meditation practice.
Our sincere desire to live a more contemplative way of life is illumined from within by intimate flashes of awareness that are very difficult if not impossible to explain in logical, objective terms. It is just that we are grateful for the visitations that, from time to time, appear, as if out of nowhere, dropping signal flares of grace that illumine the interior landscape of our lives. These graced awakenings give us hope in letting us see hints of a path that leads out of the darkness. Our hope grows stronger and merges into gratitude as we learn to follow this path with greater clarity and confidence.
We go along, day by day. We pray as it is given to us to pray. We read and reflect on the words that help us follow the path we feel interiorly called to follow. Then, from time to time we discover that our wanderings have led us into an inner clearing of such delicate and tender beauty that there is nothing to be done, for a few precious moments, but to rest in God resting in us.
Yes, it is true that can go on for quite some time wondering why we have to endure such long dry spells between our fleeting moments of renewed awareness of God' presence in our life. But the secret awakening that inspires and guides contemplative living grows ever stronger as learn to discern God' sustaining presence in the messy, interiority of our confusion and fear. The secret awakening that inspires and guides contemplative living grows ever stronger as we come to realize that our halfhearted ways are permeated through and through with God' whole hearted sustaining presence in our lives.
Yes, it may be true that things are not looking good if our hopes of finding God are up to us. But the whole matter is resolved in the secret ways in which we come to realize that God is perpetually flowing into us, sustaining us, guiding us in all our wayward ways. For after all, is not true the moments in our life that are the most memorable are those moments in which we unexpectedly discovered God waiting for us in the darkness in which we had lost our way.
